Welcome to Credo Recovery.
Credo Recovery is a Christian retreat designed for folks in recovery from addictions. It was founded in 1995 following the formats of other 4th day retreats; like Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus, Tres Dias and Kairos, the prison ministry.
It begins on a Thursday evening and runs through to Sunday about 5 p.m. It is a very full weekend with about 15 talks, meditations, lots of singing, and lots of prayer. It is designed so that every participant has the opportunity for a personal encounter with Christ.
As of 2008 Credo Recovery is in Illinois, West Virginia/Virginia/Maryland, New Jersey and Long Island, New York. There is no lack of addicts to fill up a weekend.
About 1986 the founder, Frank Rocks, began to think about how a Cursillo like retreat would benefit those in recovery, since it had been such a powerful spiritual experience in his life. It took almost 10 years of planning before Frank shared the idea with others. The others, Bud, Jim, Diana, Steve, Ruth, and Jim H. thought it was a great idea and for one year prayed about it and planned for a weekend.
Some ground rules were set immediately. The first was the absolute need for humility. This retreat weekend was to be a service to others not an ego trip for team members. The talks would follow a guideline to ensure that Jesus was the priority. The weekend was not the main purpose of the retreat; the follow-up was. That follow-up was to be weekly gathering of no more than 6 men and women. The weekly get together would be for sharing and accountability. The format would be PIETY, STUDY AND ACTION. The discussion would be about what we did to bring out these things in our lives. It is well known that accountability is essential to recovery.
